Washington Glory Release Rookie Infielder Bianca Cruz

WASHINGTON GLORY AND BIANCA CRUZ PART WAYS
Team Allows Rookie to Pursue Non-Softball Opportunities

STERLING, VAThe Washington Glory of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) softball league today announced they agreed to release rookie infielder Bianca Cruz from her contract to pursue other opportunities.

“Bianca Cruz is a fine softball player and a terrific person and we are sad to see her leave,” said team owner Paul Wilson.  “She has many diverse interests that she wants to explore after a lifetime dedicated to sports and we are releasing her from her contractual obligations to allow her to do so.  We wish her nothing but the best on her journey.”

Cruz struggled to find playing time as the Glory look to defend their 2007 championship.  She became one of the most visible and popular members of the squad during several media and public appearances.

The Glory will return to action at the Westfield Sports Complex on Thursday as they begin a homestand against the Rockford Thunder.  For more information, including tickets, please visit www.washingtonglory.com

About the Washington Glory

More information about the Washington Glory can be found online at www.washingtonglory.com.

About National Pro Fastpitch
National Pro Fastpitch is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The league, created to give elite female fastpitch players the opportunity to pursue a professional career in their chosen sport, has operated since 1997 under the names Women's Pro Fastpitch and Women's Pro Softball League.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is the official development partner of the National Pro Fastpitch League. The partnership, which began in 2002, is part of The Commissioner's Initiative on Women and Baseball, a league-wide effort to help the MLB and its 30 major league clubs build stronger relationships with female audiences.

Washington Glory PONY Partnership

PONY Baseball and Softball is very excited to announce a milestone partnership with the Washington Glory, the 2007 National Pro Fastpitch World Champions.   The Washington Glory shares PONY’s vision of protecting our nation’s youth and helping them build happier lives through sports.   Along similar lines, the Washington Glory has created a non-profit organization called Champions for Children, which provides disadvantaged and at-risk youth with mentorship and leadership through sports.    Through Champions for Children, the Washington Glory provides strong examples and training in the areas of character, integrity, academic achievement, self confidence, discipline and the development of a ‘champion’s mentality.’
“This innovative partnership between PONY and the Washington Glory will bring league and tournament play to a brand new level,” said Mike Smith PONY East Zone Softball Director. “It gives PONY youth an excellent, ‘up close & personal’ view of the results of hard work and dedication on the playing field, in their school work and at home. “
The Washington Glory and PONY will host up to 10 Glory Dream Builders Tournaments annually. Along with the tournaments, PONY and the Washington Glory will offer clinics and specialized instruction for players and coaches, as well as mentorship and leadership by the champion Washington Glory players and coaching staff.
This is a ground-breaking opportunity for PONY youth to be instructed and mentored by NPF World Champions, Olympic athletes and Division 1 All-American players while they also participate in a well-run PONY tournament in the nation’s capital area.
On top of being taught and mentored by the elite players and coaches of the Washington Glory, PONY youth will also get to see softball played at the elite professional level, as tournament attendees and their families will enjoy the chance to relax together and watch the Glory in action at their NPF games – games that possess a high quality, wholesome and very fun family environment, which The Washington Post called “a mixture of inspiration and entertainment.”
In addition to the award-winning champion Washington Glory players and coaching staff, the Washington Glory brings to the table a tournament director who has run hundreds of tournaments and numerous PONY Nationals.
For those PONY teams located outside the Washington DC area, PONY and the Glory have partnered with the Dulles Hotel Connection to provide fantastic rates for those attending the Glory Dream Builder Tournaments and Clinics.

WASHINGTON GLORY RETURN HOME WITH WINS, ROOKIES IN HAND
Following Akron Series Victory, Team Opens 12-Game Homestand

STERLING, VAThe Washington Glory of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) women’s softball league return home this week following a long, grueling, but successful 5-3 road trip, including victories in three of the four games against the Akron Racers this past weekend.

“This was the best weekend we have had as the 2008 Glory in all aspects of the game and the team coming together,” said Head Coach Carrie Dever-Boaz.  “Our pitching was incredible in every game and if we can get that performance from all four of them, we will be on our way to a repeat,” she said, referring to the Glory’s 2007 NPF Championship.

Washington started off the series on Wednesday with a 7-2 victory powered by home runs from Catalina Morris, Courtney Bures and Sara Larquier. The Glory also got a solid effort from starting pitcher Desiree Serrano, who gave up two unearned runs on three hits and a pair of walks in five innings of work.

Pitching was the key to Thursday’s game with a dominating performance from former Baylor standout Lisa Ferguson.  She threw a complete game shutout, while holding the Racers to just four hits and striking out five in a 5-0 win.

Amidst bad weather on Friday the Glory got an early jump on the Racers, scoring three early runs. The offense pounded the Racers while the pitching and defense completed the 11-0 victory that was finally completed on Saturday due to the severe weather.

In the series finale, Washington was silenced by Akron’s Angela Tincher, who threw a no-hitter to prevent a sweep. Tincher was able to strike out nine and allow just four runners to get on base. Pitcher Taryne Mowatt and the Glory defense held them from scoring in the first six innings, but after a fielding error, then a wild throw to first with two outs and a man on third, the Racers were able to squeeze out a 1-0 win.

“We would have really liked to have the sweep, but feel like we learned a lot of what we will need to do in order to get to Angela Tincher when she comes to Washington," said Dever-Boaz.

Despite the upset in their last game, the Washington Glory hopes to continue their success as they host the Venezuelan National Team this weekend. Rookies Mowatt, the2007 ESPY Female College Athlete of the Year, catcher Callista Balko and UTIL Cambria Miranda will make their home debuts. The will clash for four nights in a row starting Thursday, June 19th. All games will start at 7:05 PM at the Westfield Sports Complex (4700 Stonecroft Blvd, Chantilly, VA).  Tickets for all games are available in advance via the WSC Box Office at 703-362-4464, or online at washingtonglory.com.
